From Peresine.

Uncle of Pietro DELL’EVA (named after him to hand down his memory) and of 36 other nephews and nieces, 22 of whom are still living.

In short, the documents tell us:

Born on 28.11.1889 in Falcade, son of Giovanni Battista and Maria VALT.

Unmarried. Farmer.

Private of the 56th and then of the 115th Infantry Regiment of the Treviso Brigade (115th and 116th Regiments), part of the 34th Division (front between Val Astico and Val Brenta) of the V Army Corps – 1st Army (Trentino front).

Killed in the action at Fortino Basson on 25.08.1915, buried among the unknown in the Asiago War Memorial. Awarded 2 commemorative medals of the 1915–1918 War.

The fighting took place on the Lavarone–Asiago plateau and the heights to the east, along the old border with Austria, where there were permanent forts such as the one at Basson.

This area lies in the province of Trento, south of Levico Terme and north of Arsiero, where there is an ossuary. From published sources: «At 11 pm on 24 August 1915 the 115th Infantry Regiment attacked the Basson trench line. The aim was to break through the Austrian lines between the Luserna fort and the Cima di Vezzena, but
the action failed. By early afternoon it was all over: 48 officers and 1,046 infantrymen had fallen against the Austrian barbed wire.

Artillery support was requested in vain, but the reply of General ORO (commander of the 34th Division) was: «Barbed wire is opened with teeth or with chests!»».

After this action, which from the outset, for various reasons, had no chance of success, Pietro no longer answered the roll call.
