From Salce (Spin area). Uncle of Alvio and Bruno Carlin and of Gino and Vincenzo Tavi; the latter was given his name to keep his memory alive.

In short, the documents tell us:

“Born on 07.05.1894, son of Domenico and Elena Fiabane. Unmarried. Labourer. Private of the 56th Infantry Regiment (Marche Brigade) from 16.11.1914, missing in the action of the Böden valley (Laghi dei Piani) on 19.08.1915. Awarded two commemorative medals of the 1915–18 War.”

The Marche Brigade (55th and 56th Infantry Regiments) was part of the 2nd Division (front between Val Travenanzes and Monte Piana in Cadore), I Army Corps, 4th Army (Dolomite front).

The place where he disappeared is the Piani basin (Böden lake), north-east of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, reached from the Pian di Cengia, Laghi and San Candido cols among others; today in the province of Bolzano, then Austrian territory.

From published sources: “after some patrol actions in the preceding days, on 14.08.1915 the 1st Battalion, supported by the 2nd (56th Regiment), set out from the Pian di Cengia col and attacked and took the enemy positions at the Böden lakes. This important success opened the way for the action of the Padovin Group (Lt Col Padovin, commander of the 56th) towards the San Candido col (Innichriedl).

The 1st Battalion of the 55th was sent forward together with the 5th Company of the 56th and the Alpini of the 96th Company. The attack was launched on 19 August and repeated three times, but in the end they were driven back”.

Since the documented data match those of the actions, it is reasonable to conclude that Vincenzo went missing during the fighting at the San Candido col. He must be considered dead and never found or, more likely, never identified.

I will write at length about the Marche Brigade later, since six of the fallen served in the 56th Regiment and one in the 55th; others also served in it.
