Lest We Forget — Documentary Archive 2005–2009

English translation of the documentary inventory of “Per non dimenticarli…”. The original newspaper pages remain in Italian. Captions are translated, with their original Italian wording available alongside them.

Soldiers of the parish of Salce who died in war
The Col Maòr series, researched and edited by Armando Dal Pont, as published in the 2005–2009 issues.

Remembering means preserving names together with the evidence that documents them. This inventory brings together the people commemorated in the published pages, the photographs actually printed and their original captions. Each entry links to the complete newspaper page so that readers can verify the evidence directly.

The survey includes 46 main military biographies — 45 in the series and a separate article about Giordano Bolzan —, four commemorated civilians and seven additional references, recorded separately from the main entries. These counts cover 2005–2009: the series had already begun before 2005, and they do not represent the total number of war dead from the parish.

The section on the dead and missing explicitly concludes in issue 1/2009, p. 4. In issues 2 and 3/2009, the title continues with the subtitle Alpini and artillerymen of Salce decorated for military valour. The final tribute thanking Armando appears in issue 3/2009, p. 3.

Other people mentioned in the articles and captions

These references are not separate biographical headings and are not added to the 46 main military entries. Where the source gives only a first name and a family relationship, no surname has been supplied by inference.

  • Olivo, brother of Giuseppe Sommavilla — Born in 1912, a sailor. Killed by an explosion while clearing and unloading ammunition at Fortogna on 9 March 1946. The text gives only the name Olivo; no surname is explicitly stated in this remembrance within the entry. Col Maòr, no. 1/2007, p. 3.
  • Giuseppe, uncle of the Giuseppe Cervo born in 1921 — Mentioned as having died in the First World War aged 28. A different person from his nephew; the reference does not explicitly give his surname or year of birth. Col Maòr, no. 1/2007, p. 3.
  • Antonio, uncle of Giuseppe Cervo — Died on 29 March 1945, aged 52, ‘from causes related to the war’; buried at Domodossola. The reference gives only the name Antonio; no surname is explicitly stated. Col Maòr, no. 1/2007, p. 3.
  • Maria Supani, mother of Sirio Saronide — The text names his mother as Maria (Marieta) Supani and reports that she died on 22 May 1945 after being struck by an American military truck. A family reference, with no separate entry or photograph. Col Maòr, no. 3/2007, p. 3.
  • Giovanni, brother of Vittorio Schiocchet — The text refers to Giovanni, a man in his forties, who ‘presumably died by German firing squad on 30 June 1944’. The qualification ‘presumably’ is retained: the circumstances are not certain in the source. Col Maòr, no. 3/2007, p. 3.
  • Pietro Dell’Eva (1889-1915) — Caption: an infantryman killed in action, brother of Silvio; on the left in the photograph. Photograph 2009_02_p04_f02. Col Maòr, no. 2/2009, p. 4.

Notes on sources and identifications

The 20 regular issues from 2005 to 2009 were examined, and 37 PDFs were catalogued in the folders for those five years, including variants and supplements. References use the year and number of the issue; on the pages reproduced here, printed pagination matches the PDF page number.

Issue 1/2007, p. 3 still bears the heading ‘December 2006’. Interior pages of issues 1 and 2/2009 read ‘March 2008’ and ‘June 2008’ respectively: these headings conflict with the issue covers and have not been used to backdate the articles.

The caption of Giovanni Dal Pont receiving a decoration, in issue 2/2007, p. 2, prints ‘24 June 1946’, conflicting with the disappearance on 27 January 1943 reported in the text. The caption is retained without replacing the year with a hypothetical date. Similarly, ‘Ligia’ is retained in the caption of Antonio Coletti’s wedding photograph, although the article calls his wife Luigia.

A photograph is linked to a person only when a caption names them, the text explicitly identifies them, or the image is placed unambiguously within their entry. Identifications based on layout are labelled accordingly. The sailor’s portrait in issue 2/2006 remains unidentified: the page commemorates both Irno Sovilla and Ciro De Martino and contains no caption that resolves the question.

The photographs are crops of images actually published in the PDFs, without generative reconstruction or restoration. Group photographs are kept intact. Captions are transcribed from the page; their absence is noted where appropriate. The linked complete pages allow readers to consult the biographies and verify text, images and captions in context.
