A journey can take us back to a place; friendship allows us to return feeling that someone has been waiting for us. In the October 2026 issue of Col Maòr, the Salce Alpini Group’s return to Piedmont offers, above all, this perspective: the history of an association is also shaped by relationships that last far beyond a single event.
From Memories of Asti to the Return in 2026
Valdoisa served as the logistical base for the Alpini of Salce during the 1995 National Alpini Gathering in Asti. The trip from 16 to 18 October 2026 renewed that bond with their friends in San Damiano d’Asti. Thirty-one years separate the two occasions: a long period during which a meeting that began around an Alpini gathering became part of the Group’s collective memory.
According to the account published in the newsletter, the idea for the visit originated when Mara and Michele Sacchet met Lucrezia Povero at Vinitaly. After returning to Belluno, they shared the proposal with Group Leader Stefano Brancher, and plans for the trip began to take shape.
Remembering Beppe Giaccone
One of the moments recounted is the visit to the grave of Giuseppe “Beppe” Giaccone. The Group brought a rock from Castellavazzo bearing his photograph in uniform, recalling the Mass celebrated on the banks of the Piave near Longarone after the Vajont disaster. It is a detail that connects the place they returned to with the Belluno area and the memory of the man they came to honour.
Within the MEMORIA project, preserving these traces means following the connections between people: a photograph recalls an encounter, a journey evokes a warm welcome, and a commemoration brings back a shared story. The bond between Salce and Valdoisa also deserves to be preserved in this way, together with the references that allow readers to rediscover the original account.
Where the Story Continues
The full report also describes the visit to the Povero wineries and the encounters during the Group’s stay in Piedmont. It can be found in Col Maòr, Issue No. 3, October 2026, pages 4–5.
